Lane Bynum is a Junior at the Rhode Island School of Design. She was born and raised in Los Angeles. During the pandemic she began experimenting with painting and sculpture, then fell in love with photography during her time at RISD.
She began playing bass at age 13, joined a garage band in her teens, and found a community of alternative and creative-minded peers that fostered her artistic and musical practices and ideas. With a background in theater, she loves incorporating set dressing, makeup, costumes, and performance into her photography. The community she found in theater translates to her passion for collaboration in photography.
She draws inspiration from Cindy Sherman and Francesca Woodman, intrigued by their use of character transformation, self portraiture, and abstraction of the body. She is fascinated by editorial photography and the complexity of aesthetics. When creating sculptures and paintings, Lane dives into the contradictions of disgust and beauty, drawing inspiration from the work of Méret Oppenheim and Penny Siopis.
She is unsure if website bios are supposed to be written in the first or third person.
